Bill Lowry Named a 2024 Crain’s Chicago Business Notable Black Leader
Crain’s Chicago Business has named Nyhan President Bill Lowry a 2024 Notable Black Leader. This prestigious award recognizes talented Black individuals in Chicago across a wide range of industries that have demonstrated both significant accomplishments and impact on their surrounding community. Over his more than 30-year career, Bill has been at the forefront of legal and political initiatives that foster equity and uplift under-resourced communities across Chicago.
As President and a Member of the firm’s Board of Directors, Bill oversees key responsibilities such as policy development, hiring, attorney education, and strategic growth. He manages a diverse team and drives the firm’s DEI and pro bono initiatives while also leading its workers’ compensation and employer liability practices for insured and self-insured businesses.
Within Chicago’s political realm, Bill has been asked to serve on Mayor-Elect Brandon Johnson’s Economic Vitality and Equity Subcommittee transition team, selected as the 3rd District Cook County Commissioner since 2018, and appointed by the governor as a member of the Workers’ Compensation Advisory Board (2012–2015) and Vice-Chair of the Capital Development Board (2014–2018).
Serving as Commissioner for Cook County’s 3rd District, Bill began his political ascent as the first African American in state history to obtain a seat on the Capital Development Board. Throughout his political career, he has focused on uplifting under-resourced areas and building sustainable multicultural communities, a commitment that he instills within Nyhan.
Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County Board of Commissioners President, said of Bill, “I see firsthand Bill’s leadership and steadfast vision. He has made tremendous Countywide contributions advancing equity and economic participation. Bill is a true pillar in the legal field and, as a Hyde Park resident, I’m grateful to also call him ‘My Commissioner.’”
Additionally, Bill helped found the It’s Time Organization, which aims to address youth violence holistically, and serves as chair of the Lake Forest College Board of Trustees. He is a member of several bar associations and serves as an Honorary Trustee of Ancona Montessori School.
