Overview
Geraldine Balow (she/her) joined Nyhan in 2016 and currently focuses her practice on Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) compliance matters. Since beginning her career as an attorney in 1996, Geri has represented employers and insurance carriers at all levels of workers’ compensation litigation.
Expanding her skillset in the MSP arena, Geri is also a Medicare Set-Aside Certified Consultant (MSCC), an accreditation granted by the International Commission on Health Care Certification. Her practice involves working closely with her clients to navigate the relationship between Medicare and workers’ compensation cases. She collaborates with her team to analyze medical documentation and Medicare trends and develops a specialized plan for each case to attain the lowest, defendable Medicare Set-Aside allocation for the benefit of not only the employer but for the employee/beneficiary as well.
She draws on her knowledge and experience as an attorney to develop legal defenses and strategies to include in the MSA analysis and submission process. In addition, she works to resolve conditional payment issues which often involve developing smart solutions for inexplicable problems. Her clients know she remains prepared to take on a difficult or complex assignment while being realistic, open and pragmatic as to potential outcomes. Always willing to give it her best shot, Geri consistently obtains proven and effective results.
Geri began her legal career as a paralegal after receiving an associate degree in Paralegal Studies from MacCormac College. While working full time as a paralegal, she attended “weekend college” earning her bachelor’s degree in Business Management. She went on to law school, attending classes most weekday evenings. She has worked for small to mid-size firms as a defense attorney as well as a major insurance company as in-house counsel. She was also employed by a national MSA vendor where her interest in the Medicare arena was ignited. She has carried on and refined her Medicare-related knowledge and skills in her current position.
In her free time, Geri works on her golf game, loves to read and do puzzles and adores her 12-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever.
